Collection of Aullwood Audubon Center, Englewood, OH
In 2000, I was commissioned to create five quilted banners that would hang from the 25 foot ceiling in the arthropod classroom of the Aullwood Audobon Center. Images were painted with textile paint. Hand dyed and commercial batiks border the painted portion. A portion of the creature was enlarged even more for the back since both sides could be seen. Metallic and rayon threads were used to machine embroider and quilt the hangings.

The five banners included in this commission are featured below: Crayfish, Garden Spider (now used as my business logo), Swallowtail Butterfly, Fire Fly, Tiger Beetle.

I made these batiks using a combination of direct application and traditional immersion dyeing. Instead of removing all the wax when completed, I left a small amount on the final piece. When hung, the batik becomes translucent.
